Govanhill Library, Glasgow

Libraries need excellent light levels to make the atmosphere appealing for visitors whether they are going to stay and read or take part in other activities.

Built in 1906 as one of Glasgow’s Carnegie Libraries, Govanhill Library offers a wide range of services and activities in relaxing and inspiring surroundings.

The Baroque style of the library was designed by architect James R. Rhind, with columns, statues and a sandstone dome. More recently, in 2015 the Diversity Windows project created beautiful stained-glass windows for the library. These windows tell the stories of the people of Govanhill in colourful artwork.

Following another recent upgrade at Glasgow’s Dennistoun Library, Govanhill required upgraded lighting to replace its existing inefficient luminaires to help make savings.

The library is run by Glasgow Life, a charity with a mission to inspire people to become engaged and active in a city globally renowned for culture and sport.

Dextra worked with Glasgow Life and contractor City Building LLP on the project.

Integrated R44 & R25E sensors were used to give individual control rather than group control. Dextra also had to overcome the fact that the ceilings in the building were very high, making access an important consideration.
