Victoria Pier, Portsmouth

Having previously been used to store gunpowder, Victoria Pier in Portsmouth started life in 1777 as the ‘Beef Stage’, a meat store for the Navy. Meat was loaded onto boats at the pier and taken out to the naval ships at Spithead.

In 1842, Victoria Pier was constructed in the same location as the Beef Stage, the earliest pier in the town. It was mainly intended as a landing stage for steamers but soon became a popular place for local residents to take a stroll.

Today, the pier is still popular for walks but also provides a platform for other activities such as fishing trips.

Working with contractor Corrigenda, Dextra was asked to provide lighting for the pier, which is prone to vandalism and a robust product with a high IK rating was required.

IK ratings are defined as IK and a number from 00 to 10, this indicates the degree of protection provided by the electrical enclosures against external mechanical impacts.

“A particular part of the city is prone to vandalism, and open to the elements. We approached Dextra who supplied a robust luminaire that will withstand the harsh coastal environment, and will last for many years to come. The outcome has transformed the area, and we are looking to utilising this luminaire on other urban areas across the city”
