Primark is an international fashion retailer employing more than 80,000 colleagues across 17 countries in Europe and the US.
Founded in Ireland in 1969 under the Penneys brand, Primark aims to provide affordable choices for everyone, from great quality everyday essentials to stand-out style across women’s, men’s and kids’, as well as beauty, homeware and accessories. With a focus on creating great retail experiences, Primark has over 450 stores globally and continues to expand across new and existing markets.
In October 2021 Primark invited Dexretail to participate in a tender that covered the roll out of LED lighting to their European estate. The brief was to upgrade all the internal and external luminaires to LED on a like for like basis and create a lighting design for each store to ensure that it was compliant with their latest design standard.
In February 2022 we were awarded a seven store trial to prove the potential energy savings and test the proposed delivery method. It quickly became apparent that due to the varied nature of their European estate we would have to design a vast range of bespoke retro-fit products to tie into the existing infrastructure. During this process we carefully considered all elements of TM66 to ensure that all new products could be easily maintained and upgraded during their lifetime.
Following the success of the trial stores Primark awarded Dexretail the sole supply contract for their European refit programme. This was logistically very challenging with up to 10 vehicles from our fleet delivering to stores across Europe on a weekly basis. In addition to this we also arranged for the uplift, back haul and disposal of the old luminaires from the majority of locations through Dexreco, our in house re-cycling company.
Since the start of the project we have designed 67 bespoke fittings for Primark and by December 2024 we had delivered over 500,000 luminaires to 313 stores across 12 countries. All stores are now illuminated to a consistent standard and the programme has provided Primark with an energy saving of over 50%. We continue to work with Primark supplying LED lighting to the majority of their new stores across Europe.
